RABDF welcomes country of origin labelling for dairy products

29 November 2010

The Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers has welcomed the British Retail Consortium’s guidelines for supermarkets to introduce country of origin labelling of all dairy products made from British milk.

“The move is a huge step in the right direction, in particular for cheese,” says RABDF chairman, David Cotton. “Country of origin labelling of cheese is an issue we have campaigned long and hard for in an attempt to stem escalating imports which last year amounted to 128,000 tonnes, the equivalent of over 1.2 billion litres of liquid milk representing approximately 10% of total production. It should also increase consumer demand for genuine British cheese.”

He adds: “We would now like to see food service companies coming forward and agreeing to adopt and introduce the same guidelines for dairy products, especially cheese, which is consumed out of the home. Food service remains a very grey area however its one we are turning our attention to, to ensure consumers are provided with the same consistent information offered by retailers and in turn, contribute to a further reduction in cheese imports.”
