RABDF Farm Energy Efficiency Award goes to Norfolk farmer

3 March 2010

Winner of the inaugural RABDF Farm Energy Efficiency Award sponsored by GEA Farm Technologies is Stephen Temple, of Wighton, Norfolk who was commended for demonstrating the best energy savings on his 95 cow dairy unit. As well as the Award, he receives a variable speed vacuum drive, energy saver supplied by GEA Farm Technologies. In reserve place was Hugh McClymont, farm manager at SAC’s Crichton Royal Farm, Dumfries which carries a 485 cow herd.

“Each of the two finalists demonstrated in a two page case study essay how they had successfully implemented energy efficiency on their farm,” said judge, RABDF technical and policy adviser, Tom Rabbetts. “However, Mr Temple had the edge. He had invested in various installations including two biomass woodchip boilers supplying power to both dairy, cheese making enterprise and farmhouse, that will shortly be replaced by energy generated from an anaerobic digestor which is currently part way through commissioning.”

Mr Temple’s plans are to use maize and fodder beet together with cow slurry and whey to produce energy for the farm. Any surplus to requirements will be exported to the National Grid and in turn digestate will be returned to grassland, thereby reducing the fertilizer applications on the land and helping the unit remain within its NVZ requirements.
