RABDF welcomes supermarket ombudsman
13 January 2010
The Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers has welcomed the Government’s surprise announcement, today 13 January, to introduce an ombudsman to enforce the Groceries Supply Code of Practice from next month.
“Implementing the Competition Commission’s recommendation to introduce a watchdog has to be good news for dairy farmers, as well as other small scale suppliers,” said RABDF vice chairman, David Cotton. “An ombudsman should ensure greater transparency in dealings between farmer suppliers and retailers, and ensure that no single operator is disadvantaged. Equally important, it should help enable farmers to receive a fairer price thus stemming a further fall out in producer numbers and subsequent decline in milk production.”
He added: “The announcement was particularly welcome since RABDF has appealed to government on several occasions to go one step beyond the code of practice and establish an Ofmilk. We finally have a body given the power to investigate supply chain relationships.”
