National Youngstock Association Farm Walk Bakewell

Location: Monyash, Bakewell
Cost: Free - registration essential.

RABDF is pleased to announce a series of National Youngstock Association farm walks focussing on youngstock rearing, with the support of Pfizer Animal Health, Volac & NWF. These will take place from February to May 2012 across the UK. Please see the Events section of the website for other dates and locations.

3rd May 2012 at Tagg Lane Grange, Monyash, Bakewell by kind permission of Les Boam.

Tagg Lane Grange is a newly established Jersey farm covering 135 acres of owned and rented land. Previously they milked Holsteins but a combination of FMD and other issues meant the new farm, which was built in 1996, was not able to start up again until 2009. They are currently milking 93 jersey cows and hope to increase the milking herd up to 120 by next year through breeding their own replacements.

They are on a block calving pattern from the end of April through to August. Calves are fed on a teat bucket until they are all sucking well and are then transferred into a bigger group to be weaned at 42 days. Heifers are served at 14 months with sexed semen.

We would like to thank the following sponsors for their kind support of this event: David R Beech, Cogent, DiaryCo, Holstein UK, JE & EJ Roberts, UK Jerseys, JFC, Keenan, NMR, NWF Agriculture, Pfizer Animal Health, Vetoquinol & Volac. Please click here for full details of the sponsors for this event.

The day will commence at 10:30am and finish by 2:00pm. Lunch will be provided.

Topics to be covered include:
  • Feeding calf colostrum,
  • Effective diet management from calf to heifer,
  • Disease prevention and control,
  • Building design and ventilation.
Please note that registration is essential. If you are interested in attending the farm walk please register with Sian Mercer at RABDF on 0845 458 2711 or email sianmercer@rabdf.co.uk . Directions and further details will be sent upon registration.

Farm Open Days/Farm Walks

The RABDF Farm Open Days and Walks have proven to be a popular diary date for our members. Host farms are selected to highlight specific management techniques which have proven successful and may be of benefit to other producers. We also ensure the farms visited cover a range of breeds and species.

Held throughout the country, these open days give visitors the opportunity to view the farm as well as speak to suppliers, which much like Dairy Event and Livestock Show provides an ideal forum for information exchange. Previous open days have included visits to Gold Cup winning farms.

Watch the events section for up and coming Farm Open Days and Farm Walks.
